PEP treatment is a
lifesaving treatment for persons who get exposed to the HIV virus during
activities like sexual intercourse with any anonymous sex worker, at a massage
parlor, with homosexuals, impure blood transfusion, blood contamination during
road , bus, or any accidents, needle prick or any instrument prick during
instrumentation (dental or any other surgical process), any skin or mucous
membrane exposure during playing in playgrounds. It can happen in the case of
sexual assaults too. Exposure to the HIV virus and delay in treatment for any
reason can lead to HIV positive results, thus leading to the development of
AIDS. Initially, the signs and symptoms of HIV are a combination of common
symptoms like headaches, regular fevers, sore throats, body aches, painful and
bleeding gums, swelling in the lymph nodes, rashes, night sweats, weight loss,
mouth ulcers, etc. It is not necessary that a person who is HIV positive will
have all these symptoms. Only two or three symptoms can be there, and most such
symptoms are mistaken for colds, flu or any other curable viral infection. When
this deadly virus enters the human body and enters the circulatory system, the
blood cells, mainly the defence cells, are affected and the formation of new
defense cells and the immune system are damaged, leading to the collapse of the
defense mechanism of the body. Thus, the body becomes prone to various
infections due to the collapse of the immune system, and the life span is
reduced. When a person becomes HIV positive, the treatment and course of
medicine are continued for life to provide a system that enables the body to
survive the conditions and the surrounding or attacked infections.
PEP treatment is the golden
treatment in such cases when a person is exposed to HIV infection and within 72
hours of starting this treatment. This treatment protects you from becoming HIV
positive after immediate exposure to the HIV virus. By any means, when a person
gets exposed to the HIV virus, within 72 hours of starting this treatment (PEP
treatment) is started, a life from becoming HIV positive can be saved. It
includes a set of anti-viral drugs for a period of 28-30 days, assessment,
patient counseling, and regular follow ups. This treatment has a 98% success
rate, theoretically and practically.
